James Sklar

James Sklar brings more than two decades of global industry experience serving leading worldwide asset advisory and auction services firms. As Executive Vice President and General Counsel of HGP, Mr. Sklar is responsible for all global contracts and negotiations with clients and business partners, managing the firm’s international growth drivers and initiatives and participation on the firm’s Investment Committee and providing legal representation for Heritage Global Partners, Heritage Global Partners Europe, and Heritage Global Valuations.

Prior to HGP, he spent 12 years with GoIndustry-DoveBid where he provided legal representation for the company’s operations in North America, Europe, Asia and Latin America. During his tenure, Mr. Sklar played a key role in establishing and managing relationships with global alliance partners, opening European, Asian and Latin American offices and implementing international contract procedures. Prior to that, Mr. Sklar served as outside and then general counsel for Norman Levy Associates, Inc. until the firm was acquired by DoveBid in 2000. Previously, Mr. Sklar was a partner at Birmingham, Michigan-based boutique business law firm Zussman and Sklar and also practiced law at Jaffe Raitt Heuer and Weiss representing clients in bankruptcy, creditors’ rights, finance, general commercial and real estate matters.

Mr. Sklar holds a juris doctorate degree with cum laude honors from Wayne State University Law School and a Bachelor of Science in Economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Mr. Sklar served as vice-chair of the American Bar Association Section of International Law Commercial Transactions Committee and has been a frequent lecturer on legal issues relating to the auction and commercial lending industries.
